The city was largely built between the 1930s and the 1960s, with the neighborhoods east of Southfield Road generally older and the sections toward Ecorse Road and Pelham filling in later. The result is a mature, fairly consistent canopy on well-maintained lots — the kind of urban forest that is genuinely worth investing in rather than removing.
A canopy worth maintaining
Allen Park has more oak, hard maple and honey locust than the surrounding Downriver cities, along with the usual silver maples. Those species live longer, hold up better in wind and respond well to structural pruning — so the calculus here shifts. In much of Downriver the honest answer is often removal. In Allen Park, a good number of trees are worth keeping and just need deadwood pulled out and clearance restored off the roof.
The city also has a substantial number of mature blue spruce and Colorado spruce in front yards, planted heavily in the 1960s and 70s. Most are now losing their lower branches to Rhizosphaera needle cast, which is nearly universal on spruce in southeast Michigan at this age. Once a spruce has lost its bottom third there is no bringing it back, and removal plus replanting with something better suited is the sensible move.

Pruning is cheaper than removal
On a well-maintained Allen Park property, the right advice is frequently to prune rather than remove. A healthy mature shade tree adds real value to a home here, and taking one out because it dropped a couple of branches is an expensive overreaction.
We will tell you when that is the case. If the tree is sound and just overgrown, we say so, quote the pruning, and you keep a tree that would take thirty years to replace.
