That combination — wet soil, tight canal lots, constant wind off open water and no room to drop anything — makes Gibraltar a crane-and-rigging town. It is also a place where getting the job wrong is expensive, since there is usually a boat, a dock or a seawall directly under the tree.
Trees on ground that never dries out
Soil throughout Gibraltar stays wet, and that dictates both what grows and how it fails. Willow, cottonwood, silver maple and box elder dominate, because they are the species that tolerate saturated ground. They are also, without exception, weak-wooded and shallow-rooted.
The failure mode here is almost always uprooting rather than breaking. A tree with a shallow root plate in soft ground, catching wind straight off Lake Erie, simply tips. Which is why we look hard at soil condition and root flare on Gibraltar properties — a tree that is fine structurally can still be sitting in ground that will not hold it through the next serious blow.

We work the canal neighborhoods off Horse Island and the waterfront streets, the residential areas along Gibraltar Road, the sections near Shores Elementary, and the properties bordering Woodhaven and Brownstown. Canal-front jobs are almost always crane work — there is rarely enough clearance between the house, the seawall and the neighbor to lower sections conventionally.
Storm response here is a regular thing. Open water exposure means Gibraltar takes wind harder than the inland Downriver cities, and we get calls after events that barely register five miles north.

Waterfront work without collateral damage
On a canal lot the margin for error is a few feet. Drop a section wrong and you are replacing a seawall cap, a dock or somebody's boat cover. That is why we fly wood out with a crane on these properties rather than rigging it down through everything.
It costs a bit more per hour and it costs a lot less overall than a damage claim.
