It is also a city where tree work gets scrutinized. Residents care about their trees, the city regulates the public canopy carefully, and a job done badly will be noticed. We work here accordingly.
Oak country with real regulation
Ann Arbor sits on the moraines and outwash plains of Washtenaw County, better-drained ground than the flat lake plain to the east, and the native forest reflects that. White oak, red oak, black oak, shagbark hickory, sugar maple and American beech are all common on residential property, particularly in the older neighborhoods and the wooded west side.
Oak wilt is a serious concern in Washtenaw County. The pruning window matters here more than almost anywhere in our service area, and we hold to it: oaks are pruned between November and mid-March, full stop, unless we are dealing with a genuine hazard. Beech bark disease is also present and moving through the mature beech population.

Oak wilt discipline, not convenience
A lot of companies will prune your oak in June if you ask them to. That is how oak wilt spreads, and once a red oak is infected there is no cure — it can be dead within a season and it can move to neighboring oaks through connected root systems.
We will not do it. If your oak needs work in summer and it is not a genuine hazard, we schedule it for winter. That is what Michigan DNR and MSU Extension recommend and it is not a close call.
