Tree Service in Detroit, MI

Detroit is a hard city to get tree work done in, and we hear about it constantly. One of our customers in Detroit wrote that she needed a tree taken down against her garage, requested quotes from two other companies, and both passed on the job because of where it sat. We were the only one who quoted it, and we did exactly what we said we would.

That is the pattern here. Tight lots, tricky access, alleys, aging service drops, structures right on the property line, and a lot of companies who would rather work in the suburbs. We work Detroit regularly and we price it the same as anywhere else.

A century-old canopy under real stress

Detroit's residential street trees were planted in waves through the early twentieth century, and the surviving ones are old. Silver maple, Norway maple, elm remnants, honey locust and a lot of volunteer growth make up most of it. Compacted, filled urban soil and decades of deferred maintenance mean many of these trees are stressed, decayed and carrying heavy deadwood loads.

The bigger story on vacant and lightly-maintained parcels is volunteer succession. Tree-of-heaven, box elder, Siberian elm and mulberry colonize any ground left alone for a few seasons, and they grow fast. Within a decade a vacant lot next to an occupied house has full-size trees leaning over the roof, none of them planted and none of them structurally sound. That is a large share of what we get called about.

Where we work in Detroit

We work across the city, with the heaviest concentration on the southwest and west sides — Delray, Springwells, Southwest Detroit, Warrendale, Brightmoor, Rosedale Park, Grandmont and the neighborhoods along West Vernor and Michigan Avenue. We also work the east side, the areas near Jefferson-Chalmers, and the northwest along Grand River and Seven Mile.

Alley access is common in Detroit and it is a real advantage. Where we can put a chipper in the alley behind the garage, a backyard removal that would otherwise be a slog becomes a straightforward job. Vacant lot clearing beside occupied homes is steady work as well, both for private owners and for neighbors dealing with what has grown up next door.

We take the jobs other companies decline

The reason companies pass on Detroit jobs is usually access — a tree wedged between a garage and a fence with no clean way to work it. That is a rigging problem, and rigging is what we do.

We are insured, we provide the certificate before starting, we clean up completely, and the quote we give is the price you pay. Our Detroit customers have been some of our most generous reviewers, and it is because that combination is genuinely harder to find in this city than it should be.

I live in Detroit and it is hard to find any company to do a job in my area. I required a tree cut down that was up against my garage and I had requested quotes from two other companies that both passed on it because of where it was located. One of a Kind was the only one that gave me a reasonable quote and did just what they quoted to do the job. They turned out to be the best company for me.

Detroit tree service FAQs

Other companies said they could not do my tree. Will you look at it?
Yes. Trees against garages, over fences and in tight alleys are standard work for us. It is a rigging problem rather than an impossible one, and we quote it the same way we quote anything else.
Can you clear the overgrown vacant lot next to my house?
Yes, with the owner's authorization. Volunteer trees leaning over an occupied house from a vacant lot are one of the most common hazards we deal with in Detroit.
