The city has also invested heavily in its street canopy over the years, so there is more good tree material here than in comparably dense communities. The result is a lot of pruning work alongside the removals.
Prewar lots with postwar-sized trees
Ferndale lots are typically 35 to 40 feet wide with a house, a driveway and a garage on them. The trees planted when the neighborhoods went in are now full-size, which means a canopy spanning three properties from a single trunk.
The species mix is the standard inner-ring blend — Norway and silver maple, honey locust, ash that is now dead, and a scattering of oaks and lindens. Ferndale also has a good number of trees that were topped in past decades, and the regrowth from those cuts is weakly attached and is a recurring source of storm failures.
Where we work in Ferndale
We work throughout the city — the neighborhoods east and west of Woodward, the areas near downtown and Nine Mile, the streets around Ferndale High School, the sections along Hilton and Livernois, and the blocks bordering Pleasant Ridge, Oak Park and Detroit.
Alley access on many Ferndale blocks helps considerably. It is often the difference between an efficient job and one where every branch is carried through a side gate.

Topped trees need honest advice
If a previous company topped your tree, you have a specific problem: the regrowth is attached only to the outer wood at the cut, and it gets heavier every year while the union stays weak. Those limbs fail in storms with real regularity.
Sometimes we can reduce that regrowth and restore a reasonable structure over a few cycles. Sometimes the tree is far enough gone that removal is the honest answer. We will tell you which one you have rather than selling you the more expensive option by default.
What customers say
From our 80 Google reviews. These are customers from across our Michigan service area rather than Ferndale specifically — we do not put words in anyone's mouth about where they live.
“Crew arrived as expected and were very particular about protecting my and my neighbors' properties. Very professional, courteous and efficient. Removed a 35 foot pine tree, ground out stump and cleaned the area immaculately in just over an hour. Would definitely hire again if needed.”
“I highly recommend One of a Kind! They came out and performed the work in a timely fashion. I also felt like the crew treated my property like it was their own. They removed a huge tree with minimal impact to mine or my neighbors' property. All of which was cleaned up like they were never here.”
