How to Storm-Proof Your Trees Before Michigan Weather Does It For You
The trees that come down in Michigan storms are predictable. Here is how to find yours before the wind does.

After enough storms you stop being surprised by which trees come down. It is the same species, the same defects and the same situations every single time. Which means most storm damage is preventable, if somebody looks before the season rather than after.
What Michigan actually throws at trees
Three distinct threats, and they attack different weaknesses.
Summer thunderstorm downbursts and derechos drive straight-line winds through canopies in full leaf. This is why July storms take out far more trees than February ones — a leafed-out canopy is a sail. Southeast Michigan sees these regularly and the flat terrain across Wayne and Macomb counties offers nothing to slow them down.
Ice storms load every twig and branch with weight the tree never evolved to carry. A half-inch of ice can multiply branch weight several times over. Ice finds the weak unions — this is when Bradford pears split down the middle.
Saturated soil is the quiet one. Heavy spring rain softens the ground, and a tree that would have held in a dry August tips over in a moderate May wind because the root plate has nothing to grip. On the heavy clay soils across Westland, Warren and much of the region, this is the dominant failure mode.
The trees that fail here, in order
- 1Silver maple. Fast-growing, weak-wooded, planted everywhere in the postwar boom, and typically hollow-centered by seventy. The single most common storm failure in southeast Michigan.
- 2Bradford pear. Extremely narrow branch unions with included bark. Past about twenty years old it splits reliably. If you have one, it is a matter of when.
- 3Dead ash. Two decades after emerald ash borer, standing dead ash are brittle and shed limbs without warning.
- 4Cottonwood. Enormous, shallow-rooted and common along the Detroit River, Grosse Ile and the Huron corridor. Saturated soil plus a huge canopy plus wind equals whole-tree failure.
- 5Box elder and willow. Both weak-wooded, both fast-growing, both drop limbs constantly.
- 6Previously topped trees. Regrowth from topping cuts is attached only to the outer wood and gets heavier every year while the union stays weak.
What actually reduces wind damage
Deadwooding — the highest-value work there is
Removing dead branches does two things: it eliminates the wood most likely to break, and it lets you see the live structure clearly. It is also relatively inexpensive. If you do one thing on this list, do this one.
Selective crown thinning — with a caveat
Careful thinning of interior branches lets wind pass through rather than pushing against a solid canopy. The caveat is real though: over-thinning is worse than not thinning. Stripping the interior and leaving foliage only at the branch tips creates "lion tails" that whip and snap in exactly the conditions you were trying to protect against. Thinning is a light touch, not a gutting.
Crown reduction on over-extended limbs
A long horizontal limb reaching out over a roof is a lever. Shortening it back to a suitable lateral branch reduces the leverage substantially. This is the correct technique — cutting it back to a stub is topping, and it makes things worse.
Cabling and bracing weak unions
Where a tree has a co-dominant union worth saving, a properly installed cable between the two stems limits how far they can move apart in wind. It is a real solution for a valuable tree. It is not a permanent fix — cables need periodic inspection — and it does not turn a failing tree into a sound one.
The pre-season walkaround
Do this in early spring, when the leaves are still off and you can see the structure. Fifteen minutes per tree.
- 1Circle the base. Mushrooms, cracks, cavities, heaved or mounded soil?
- 2Check the lean against a fixed reference — a fence post, a house corner, a utility pole. Has it changed?
- 3Look up the trunk for vertical seams, bulges and old wounds.
- 4Find the major unions. Are any of them tight V-shapes with bark pinched between the stems?
- 5Estimate deadwood. Anything over roughly ten percent of the canopy warrants a call.
- 6Look at what is underneath — house, garage, driveway, play area, power line.
- 7Note anything that has changed since last year. Change is the most useful signal there is.
After a storm, check again
The tree that fails during a storm is obvious. The one that quietly tore half its anchoring roots and will go over next October is not, and it is the one that damages something expensive.
Look for new soil cracking at the base, fresh gaps at the root flare, limbs that are cracked but still attached, and branches hung up in the canopy. Hangers in particular are the most under-appreciated post-storm hazard — they are held by friction and they will come down.
Get ahead of it
Late winter is the right time for this work — the structure is visible, the ground is firm, and schedules are less compressed than they are the week after a storm. Our tree trimming and pruning crew does the bulk of preventive work between December and March.
