The Rouge River runs through the city and that corridor is where most of our storm work happens. Properties backing onto the river floodplain sit on wetter ground with bigger bottomland species, and they take the brunt of it when a wind event moves through.
Rouge River corridor and postwar subdivisions
Along the Rouge, the species are what you would expect on floodplain ground: silver maple, cottonwood, box elder, willow and green ash. Large, fast-growing and shallow-rooted in saturated soil. These are the trees that come down in a serious storm, and the properties along the river corridor account for a disproportionate share of our Dearborn Heights emergency calls.
Away from the river, the housing is mostly 1950s and 60s ranches and bungalows with the standard planting of that era — silver and Norway maple, blue spruce, a lot of ash. The ash are gone. What is left is a canopy of sixty-to-seventy-year-old maples that are all reaching the same decision point at the same time, and a lot of spruce that has lost its lower third to needle cast.

We work both the north and south ends: the neighborhoods off Ford Road and Telegraph, the areas near Crestwood and Annapolis high schools, the streets along the Rouge River corridor and Hines Drive, and the sections bordering Dearborn, Inkster and Westland. Properties adjacent to Hines Park and the river floodplain get special attention for wind exposure and root-zone flooding.

When a line of storms crosses western Wayne County, the Rouge corridor is where the trees come down. Saturated soil, big canopies and open floodplain exposure add up.
