The city and surrounding township combine a walkable historic downtown with large wooded residential lots and estate properties, particularly toward Beck, Napier and the Northville Hills area. Both call for careful, well-cleaned-up work.
Good soil, good trees, real woodlots
A lot of Northville development was built into existing woodlots rather than on cleared farmland, which means many properties have genuine native forest trees rather than planted landscape stock. American beech, shagbark hickory, red and white oak, black cherry and tulip poplar all show up regularly.
Woodlot trees bring specific issues. They grew up in a stand, so they have tall straight trunks with high canopies and comparatively little taper — which makes them vulnerable when adjacent trees are removed and they suddenly bear full wind load. Beech bark disease is also present in this part of the state and is worth watching on mature beech. And deep shade means declining understory trees that eventually need to come out.

Thinking about the stand, not just the tree
On a wooded Northville lot, the trees hold each other up. They grew that way. Take out three in the middle and the remaining ones are exposed in a way they have never been.
We flag that at the estimate. Sometimes the answer is to remove fewer trees, sometimes it is to reduce the crowns of the ones left standing. Either way it is worth knowing before the saws start.
