A typical Garden City lot runs well back from the street, which means the trees that matter are often a hundred and fifty feet from the road with a house, a garage and a fence between them and our truck. Access is the whole problem.
Big trees at the back of long lots
Because the lots are deep and were originally garden plots, Garden City back yards accumulated trees over decades rather than all at once — fruit trees, volunteer maples, planted spruce and a lot of ash. The result is a more varied canopy than the uniform subdivisions of Westland next door, and often a more crowded one.
Old fruit trees are common here and they are their own category. Apple, pear and cherry planted seventy or eighty years ago are typically well past productive life, structurally poor, and full of deadwood. Sometimes they are worth restoring with careful pruning. More often they are worth replacing.
Where we work in Garden City
We work the whole city — the neighborhoods off Ford Road, Cherry Hill and Warren, the areas around Garden City High School, the streets near Merriman and Middlebelt, and the sections bordering Westland, Livonia and Inkster.
On deep lots, access is the conversation we have first. Sometimes there is a gate wide enough for the chipper. Sometimes brush gets carried out. Sometimes the neighbor with the wider drive lets us come through, and we always ask before assuming.

Access is the job
On a 40-by-200-foot Garden City lot with a tree at the very back, the cutting is maybe a quarter of the labor. The rest is moving material a hundred and fifty feet to the street.
We plan that before we quote, so the number you get is the number you pay. Companies that do not think it through end up either eating hours or asking for more money halfway through, and neither is a good outcome.
